Beverley - Lairgate gossip, a walk

TOUR GUIDE: Val Wise

Kemp's Corner, 68 Saturday Market, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8AJ

How Beverley 'modernised' and responded to change - all in one street.

Local author and historian Val Wise offers a new guided walk, which looks at how Beverley responded to innovation and new advances in public services: demolishing insanitary buildings and widening roads for increasing traffic, building the telephone exchange within an old house, housing wireless engineers in the Lairgate Hotel, while the Rambla Bakery owner Stanley Stephenson filmed events in the streets.
