Beverley - St Mary's Church

St. Marys Church, North Bar Within, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8DL

St Mary's Beverley is one of the two amazing churches that dominate this ancient market town. There is always something new to see, as historians decode the carvings of the past centuries, and 21st century carvings are added.

St Mary’s is one of the most beautiful parish churches in England. Established in the mid 12th century, it has always been the townspeople’s church and was generously supported by the merchants of Beverley. The church is full of many treasures, including the beautiful St Michael’s chapel, the Ceiling of Kings, and hundreds of brightly coloured Tudor roof bosses.

There will also be a chance to see the progress of work on the Narnia sculptures, from C.S.Lewis's book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, new carvings that are replacements for weathered stonework on the north side of the church nave.

Other very interesting material on the history of St Mary's can be found on the web at https://stmarysbeverley.org/heritage/
